Allow Father Michael McGivney Students to wear Durags and Bonnets

Allow Father Michael McGivney Students to wear Durags and Bonnets
Why this petition matters
On Monday March 7th, 2022, students of Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham, were told that only religious headwear is allowed-prohibiting durags and bonnets. Not only do durags and bonnets protect our hair from harsh weathers, curls/coils are also more prone to breakage when unprotected. According to an article written by Alisha Acquaye for Allure, “Like many other styles and traditions chosen by black people, mainstream society predictably labeled the durag as something criminal and crude.” Durags, headscarfs, and bonnets are used for black cultural expression and identity. Taking away the right to wear our cultural headwear excludes the black community of Father Michael McGivney from the remaining student body. Something harmless should not be a reason to censor cultural identity. Please sign the petition below to permit the right to wear durags, bonnets, and headscarfs once again.
