Infuse sustainable mentality into curriculum

To whom it may concern,

We, the students of FIT, are concerned about the inopportunity to learn about Sustainability in business and design. Though there are some major specific classes offered, as well as additional courses outside of the regular curriculum, we feel that it is necessary to add classes that are obtainable to everyone, so that we can be better prepared for our futures in a conscious world.

We feel it is important to learn what sustainability really encompasses, as well as the current and future market trends and opportunities. As a leading school in design and design business, we find it crucial to be ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies and practices so that we may translate what we are learning at FIT, and bring our education and experiences into the marketplace to mold a more sustainable future.

Proposed classes of interest are as follows:

Intro to Sustainability

This class is an introduction to what it really means to be sustainable. Sustainability is not a buzzword, but an all-encompassing idea behind our actions. Open to all majors, this elective class explores the whys, whats, and hows behind sustainability using class lecture, discussion, market analysis, and group projects.

Product Life Cycle Analysis

In this course, students will learn about the lifecycle of products and develop different methods to improve and close the loop so that materials do not end up as waste and can be re-used, re-cycled, or re-purposed. Through readings (cradle to cradle), market analysis, and group projects, students will explore innovative solutions to problems facing their markets.

Sustainable Materials

This class will consider materials used in different majors and will analyze what makes materials more or less sustainable. Different materials will be analyzed along with growing practices, chemical usage, Dye processes, water usage, pollution, end of life use, etc… This class will provide a knowledge base for students so that they can make educated decisions about the materials they are using now and in the future and the impact their choices will have.

These classes were developed by FIT business and design students interested in learning more about sustainability. We believe that with a well-informed faculty and passionate students, we can be on the forefront of the future of sustainability in fashion related industries.

Thank you for your time.
