On the night of September 12th, 1,428 Atlantic White-Sided dolphins were brutally massacred at Skalabotnur beach in the Faroe Islands. This is not just an isolated incident; Grindadrap is a common practice in the Danish Faroe islands that involves herding dolphins and whales into shallow bays to be killed. This is possibly the biggest cetacean hunt in the history of humanity.

With significant advancements in animal rights in 2021, this act is not just a step back but shows blatant disregard for animal suffering. I'm urging Bárður á Steig Nielsen, Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, to recognize dolphins as non-human persons to stop such atrocities from becoming a standard for normality.

Whilst, the Faroe Government has issued a statement promising to reconsider and re-evaluate dolphin hunting, ‘consideration’ of an age-old practice doesn’t promise change. Hence, legal accountability for such actions is crucial.

A non-human person is considered to have limited legal rights that can be exercised to prevent abuse of those who can’t speak up for themselves. Dolphins and other cetaceans like whales are highly social, sentient, compassionate and intelligent. In fact, dolphins have unique whistles (or names) for each other. Just because this consciousness doesn’t translate to human language, shouldn’t result in their exploitation and abuse.

Murdering a creature that has an exceptional awareness about things we think are unique to humans- family and friends- and are highly altruistic shouldn’t be normal in our world. Bloody, red rivers on Instagram feeds shouldn’t be normal. Legal accountability can stop what simple words can’t. Dolphins aren’t ‘natural resources' to be utilised by humanity- they are in their own way, people.

Please sign this petition to demand the recognition of dolphins as non-human persons to stop dolphin hunting.
