Rick Lemons started this petition to Fans of the Chicago Blackhawks and

I have been a Blackhawks fan my entire life, from the dark ages of the early 2000's to the glory years of the 2010s, from watching games in a stadium with 5,000 fans to Stanley Cup parades down Michigan Ave. This is a team that has some of the best fans in all sports. We put our trust, our faith, and our passion into this team, supporting them whenever they stepped on the ice.

And that is why this news of the sexual assault cover-up is so hard to swallow for us Blackhawks faithful. Personally, I feel as though I have been stabbed in the back by an organization touted to be "top-class" and "the gold standard of professionalism". Yet, here we are, sitting and watching as the management of this team blatantly admits to knowledge of a team employee sexually abusing two players during the 2010 cup run. At this point, the defense of the team is that by law they were not required to report this incident to the police because the players during the 2010 cup run were not minors, disabled, or in a care facility. It's just sickening to read this statement in the Blackhawk's recent disposition, as it is simply an admission of guilt while simultaneously absolving them of any LEGAL wrongdoing.

Well, regardless of how these cases play out in the courtroom, in the hearts and minds of all Blackhawks fans, of all people who live in Chicago and are proud to call it their home, this case has now been closed on any moral standing. Stan Bowman and the upper management team knew of the abuse, failed to report it to the authorities, and they think they can wash their hands clean of any resulting implications? Where is the accountability? How can we as Blackhawks fans allow these perpetrators of abuse to stay in their positions of power and continue to control the very DNA of this team?

I have stayed with this team through the early dark ages, to the glory years, and now back to missing the playoffs for the past 4 seasons (play-in bubble does not count). This story, and how the Blackhawks have handled it, is truly appalling.

That is why I am calling on all Blackhawks fans, of all Chicagoans, of sports fans everywhere, to sign this petition and demand that Stan Bowman, and anyone else in upper management that knew of this matter to resign immediately. If this case continues to get kicked under the rug not only by the Blackhawks but by the NHL as a whole, how can this kind of behavior be eliminated from the game? If there is no accountability, then what kind of message does that send to everyone else who has suffered from sexual abuse in pro sport?

I ask if you are still reading this, at what point does your moral compass get so out of alignment, that you would protect a sexual abuser rather than protect your own players? And if this truly is the decision that Stan Bowman and company made, they clearly are unfit for the role and should resign immediately.

Thank you,

One Blackhawks Diehard to Another
