The Namibian government is drafting a law that could potentially make the advertisement, promotion, and sponsorship of alcohol and other dependence-inducing substances in Namibia illegal.

Alcohol advertisement ban will curb the negative impacts of severe alcohol consumption, addiction, teenage and youth-Alcohol-dependency, reduction of GBV among other things.

The proposed law would therefore ban the Alcohol advertisement and promotion of highly addictive and illegal narcotic drugs that affect mental performance, and cause changes in mood, awareness, thoughts, feelings, or behavior.

Alcohol is estimated to be the fifth leading risk factor for global disability‐adjusted life years. Restricting or banning alcohol advertising may reduce exposure to the risk posed by alcohol at the individual and general population level.
