The profession of radiography in Australia is a highly undervalued and unappreciated sector of the Health Sciences. Our role in society and medicine is integral in diagnosis, treatment and research yet it is not compensated well enough. Our responsibilities have changed and have become far more paramount in terms of the delivery of care we provide to patients. Starting rates for radiographers begin at $28 and only move up to $55 an hour (as per the award) with even more study and over 30+ years of experience. Most individuals are shocked when told that graduate entry pay is the same as reception pay or retail pay, even though the process to become a radiographer requires a 4 year university degree and 48 weeks of unpaid full time work. For the amount of work, the responsibility, and the debt we have found ourselves in, $28 an hour is unacceptable. A starting salary of $70,000 is more appropriate with a higher increase in pay as skills develop should be implemented. To FairWork Aus, the Government and MRPBA, without radiographers, diagnosis and treatment would be delayed and more expensive. Please reconsider.
