At approximately 9:54 pm on Monday 3 August, parents of Bonnyrigg High School students were informed that the school would be "non-operational for on site learning tomorrow, Tuesday 4 August 2020" as "a student has tested positive for COVID-19."

The email did not detail whether the school would reopen for Wednesday 5 August, which is the scheduled date for the start of the Year 12 Trial Examinations.

PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITY

A major institution within the Fairfield City Council; Bonnyrigg High School should remain non-operational with trial examinations postponed until the situation has been stabilised and all students who are possible contacts of the positive case have been identified. As Bonnyrigg HS comprises of a populace of over 1700 students, this will allow time for all students and staff to show symptoms and self-isolate, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

POSTPONING TRIAL EXAMINATIONS

The trial examinations are one of the most stressful and crucial periods over the entire HSC year, accounting for more than 30% of internal assessments. In light of COVID-19, some course examinations are now worth 50% of internal marks. It is during this part of the year, that stress and anxiety level peak to an all time high, and this constant state of uncertainty that we are living within will only pose as a detriment to the wellbeing and assessment marks of senior students.Year 12 students have already missed out on a substantial part of in class learning during the six week lockdown period, prohibiting the grade from attaining an ATAR that is reflective of their full potential.

A large proportion of parents and students are currently unwilling to return to Bonnyrigg High School within the following week, meaning that should trial examinations commence, a majority of the cohort will be absent during the English examinations scheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday, and Mathematics Standard and Advanced exams scheduled for this Friday. To prevent high levels of academic misadventures and the high likelihood of academic misconduct through cheating, it is in the best interest of the school and students to have the examinations postponed to a later date.

Postponing the trial exams is hardly an inconvenience, as there are numerous schools with examinations scheduled to start in Week 5 of the school term [ in 2 weeks time ]. Rather, postponement will be a showcase of Bonnyrigg High School's value for education, wellbeing and future of its students.

We can resit examinations, but We cannot redo Our lives.
