A MESSAGE FROM FAIRFAX JOURNALIST BRAD WORRALL
Local news – it’s how our communities stay in touch with stories and information that affect their lives. But in the Victorian heartland, that’s under threat.
I’m a senior journalist at The Border Mail and I’m starting a petition to try and stop Fairfax from sacking over 60 regional journalists, photographers and news production staff from papers like the Bendigo Advertiser, The Courier, Wimmera Mail Times, Stock and Land, The Standard, The Border Mail, The Ararat Advertiser and Stawell Times News.
These papers tell local communities what they need to know – the good, the bad and the ugly.
In 2012 at The Border Mail we launched a series investigating rural youth suicide and depression, providing families of lost loved ones and the community a voice. Locals trusted local journalists with their stories and allowed photographers to capture the torment of those left behind. It won an award for journalistic leadership and it helped win more headspace centres for at risk youth.
In 2014, The Courier launched a special investigation into claims that state government spray-hand employees were subjected to toxic chemicals without protection for decades. A government inquiry has been launched into appalling safety standards as a result.
The stories and voices of so many rural communities may be in jeopardy – if Fairfax goes ahead with these cuts, the ability to report vital local news stories to regional communities will be under threat. Who will tell these stories now?
Please sign my petition to tell Fairfax that the jobs of the dedicated editorial staff of these Victorian newspapers must not disappear – and save local news.
