Susanne Navas started this petition to Fairfax County Public Schools

The students in Fairfax Country Public Schools (FCPS) in Northern Virginia have for the most part been engaged in remote learning since March 2020. School-based extracurricular activities have been stopped or drastically altered. Teachers are working hard to keep students engaged and to prevent them from falling behind, by teaching via online instruction, with students staring at a screen for six hours a day, plus homework. The usual events and activities that offset the stress of school have been canceled. And now, FCPS administrators have shown that the Snow Day, which even before COVID-19 hit, was a cause for rejoicing among students and teachers alike, has been canceled.

Our youth mental health has been deteriorating, a known fact although the data for 2020 are not yet published. All of the screen time is taking its toll, as well as the lack of connection, and loss of so many things we once took for granted. Now more than ever, our students and teachers need the little things that allow us to feel an unexpected reprieve from the monotonous routine. Fresh air, sledding, a snowball fight... Other counties (eg LCPS) have chosen to keep Snow Days. Why not FCPS?
