Sammy Hayes started this petition to Fairfax County Public Schools

This year a new rule has come in to play. That students may not use their phones at lunch, in the hallways, and pretty much for the whole school day. Many students were not happy. Understandably especially because lunch was really their only free time to be able to be on their phones. Lunch is supposed to be a time to relax for a little while before you have to go back to working. They say the new phone rule is so that students socialize. Well most students socialize in person and on their phone at lunch. But some students might be more of an introvert and don’t like taking to other people and their way of relaxing is going on their phone. Some might argue it will be a good change for them to learn to socialize but sometimes it just makes people happier to be alone and the school needs to respect that. Lunch should be a time where students choose what they want to do. Not the school. The student. This is a new day and age where technology is used to interact with other people and we should be progressing forward by letting kids use their phone instead of going backwards. Fairfax County Public Schools are supposed to be technologically advanced yet we can’t let out students use phones during their lunch period? We need to change this.
