FCPS Climate Student Coalition started this petition to Fairfax County Public Schools

Hello everyone!

We are a coalition of students who are advocating for more comprehensive climate education in the Fairfax County School System. We believe that while the FCPS curriculum has a foundation for climate education, there is a lot of work to be done to ensure that our students understand the complexity and urgency of the climate crisis.

We decided to target elementary school curriculums because it is important to teach these values at a young age.

Our proposed changes to the curriculum have two parts:

First, we are urging schools to be more cohesive when discussing climate change scientifically. Concepts already taught are not tied back to the overarching idea of climate change. For instance, climate change is currently minimized to “weather patterns,” which does not go into appropriate depth about the causes and effects of climate change. These simple changes will create a true foundation of students who understand that their actions and decisions directly impact our planet.

Second, we propose that in early elementary school, environmental values are instilled in students to help them understand the importance of the climate and environment. This includes the economic, scientific, intrinsic, and ecological benefits the environment has on our everyday lives. We also propose the addition of the concept of the ecological/carbon footprint, and ways for students to reduce their footprint at an early age. Studies show that instilling these morals at an early age results in more compliance to environmentally-friendly habits. We want students to understand at an early age that higher carbon footprints oftentimes are a sign of privilege, and understanding that their habits can negatively hurt less privileged communities.

We ask for your support on this improvement of FCPS curriculum, and education. This is a time for action, especially when we still have a chance to save our planet, through the power of education and habit-building. Please share our petition with others!

Thank you.
