I am against having the name of the high school because of arguments are not valid and this sends a negative and alarming and divisive precedent for future demands to change names of streets, schools, buildings, and so on.

Our history is our history, deal with it.
Many of the founders had slaves, are we to expunge their names as well? Washington, Jefferson?

The original petition has not considered the cost and labor/paperwork involved in changing the names of these schools. Additionally these names are a part of our history and should not be forgotten, even if the values these people held were from a different time.

The school name is part of our history, and particularly important to keep it for those, like myself, who attended Robert E. Lee High School!

This whole thing is getting crazy. If we're going to change everything that has any reference to people who had slaves, advocated slavery, fought for the south or - for that matter - opposed women's voting rights and child labor laws, we might as well just start using numbers.

I now live in Kansas City but heard of the shenanigans going on back home over the names of our high schools. I gratuated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1968. In all of my years, I think two people have asked the name of the high school I graduated from, so I think some "hollywood liberal types" are simply wrong on the whole issue of embarassment over an historical name on a school. It is after all history and unless we want to re-write our history and lie, there is little we can or should do about it. Heck, we might even discover that more than two people exist that are PROUD of Virginia's history.
I, for one, am.
DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF MY HIGH SCHOOL.

I agree, I went to school at Robert E Lee... had no problem with it then and have no problem with it now.

You can't change history, names of people, events and acts that occurred. We can only teach the young about the wrongdoings of others because they existed. The memorials are living memories of what occurred and who did what. I went to RE Lee HS and proud of it. Not because of the name but what it signified to me. Please don't change the names.
