Save the Jazz Music program at my local middle school - Knollwood in Fair Haven, NJ

I graduated from Knollwood Middle School a few years ago and constantly participated in the music programs at the school, many of which helped me learn and love music so that I could continue my passion in high school. My favorite music program to participate in was the Jazz combos. The very great music teachers at the school would put together around 5 smaller groups of musicians of all grades that learned how to play their instruments with their peers. It was a very exciting learning environment that really taught the kids how to play and interact with other students. Many of my friendships and music skills were developed through the Jazz combos. I would sit in the band room at lunch with my friends and practice the songs while having fun. Eventually, after a few years in the jazz combos, students would enter the Jazz big band, which was more time consuming, harder and had many more members.Since there are many musicians at Knollwood, I was only able to do Big Band in 8th grade. The Jazz combos were necessary because of the abundance of musicians in the school and a way to practice for Jazz Big Band, it was also a great social environment with great kids. As of the 2017-18 school year, the school has decided to cut the Jazz Combos and only have Jazz Big Band. Since there are 5 grades in the school, many kids will have to wait years before they are able to participate in the Jazz program. I believe that Jazz combos are a wonderful way for kids to participate in music programs and cutting them would only hurt the students eager to learn about music. This petition asks the Fair Haven Board of Education to reconsider removing the Jazz Combos at Knollwood Middle School. Down with the Tyranny!
