N'cki Jackson started this petition to Mayor, City of District Heights Johnathan Medlock and

The residents of the Incorporated City of District Heights, MD demand actions to foster fair and free elections in addition to transparency in our city government.

As of 31 DEC 21, the City of District Heights Board of Supervisors of Elections (BOSE) 3-year term has expired. According to the charter, the Mayor appoints the BOSE with the approval of the Commission. As of 08 JAN 22, Mayor Johnathan Medlock has yet to appoint a new BOSE nor has he publicly indicated that he will do so in time for the upcoming 02 May 22 election - (up for vote: Ward 1 Commissioner; Ward 2 Commissioner and Mayor).

The election timeline requires that several actions be accomplished in a timely manner, by a trained BOSE, before the election. These tasks include but are not limited to, approval of candidate packages, facilitation of sending absentee ballots, mailing voter cards to residents, securing voting machines, filing proper documents with the County or State, and approving ballots.

The Community must have confidence that those tasked with overseeing elections are competent, trustworthy and the process is secure. The residents of the incorporated City of District Heights, MD ask that City Attorney and the elected officials - Mayor Medlock and Commissioners - please give thought to the upcoming election. We recommend immediately taking one of the following courses of action, offered by the current residents of the city:

  1. Mayor Medlock to reinstate the outgoing BOSE to serve in the 02 May 22 election. This group is trained and ready.
  2. Appoint and confirm new BOSE members as soon as possible in order for new members to obtain required training in a timely manner.
  3. Reinstate a former BOSE member that can provide some institutional knowledge to newly appointed and confirmed members.
  4. We ask that the commission and city attorney address this issue immediately and/or turn 02 May 22 elections over to the county.

There are four (4) months from the election and residents want to move forward in a way that does not hinder or suppress our rights to a free and open election process.

Residents of the incorporated City of District Heights, Maryland, let your elected officials know that you demand immediate action in the fight to nurture transparency within our government.
