We are growing increasingly concerned at the lack of access to specialized services that are available to children living on the outskirts of Winnipeg.

We currently live less than 10 minutes from Winnipeg. Yet, according to the province, our family must access services in another city 45 minutes away.

Our children are consistently being denied access to specialized services in Winnipeg because the region offers a watered down, non specialized version.

As an example, adults in the province have access to the specialized anxiety clinic at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, which is an amazing resource. Yet, children are consistently denied access to the Children and Adolescent Anxiety Clinic in Winnipeg. Instead, they are thrown into a broken regional system that treats them with councillors and kicks them out after 10 sessions whether they’ve been helped or not.

As another example, there is a physio clinic in Winnipeg that specializes in chronic pain in children. People who live less than 10 minutes outside of Winnipeg can’t access this clinic. Their children are expected to go to a generalized adult clinic that does not specialize in the care needed.

These are just two of the many examples of specialized care that our children are denied.

We would like to see fair access to specialized services in Winnipeg for all children across the province.
