Lower the age of independence for registering for financial aide
The age of financial independence is 24 years and older. Many students who are living on their own are self-supporting, independent adults who have no financial ties to their parents. They claim themselves on their own taxes, work, and support their own cost of living. Being a legal adult should mean that you are able to register yourself for financial aide and be responsible for your own student money. It is unfair of them to demand our parents' information when they have nothing to do with our adult lives or our financial situation. Some parents will refuse to give their information, resulting in denial from FAFSA. On the other hand, if the information is given and the parent(s) make too much money, that does not mean that the adult applying for financial aide will receive any financial assistance from them. Sign this petition if you believe that you are an adult, who is paying your own taxes, living out of your parents' home, who works hard, and who should be able to apply for financial aide on your own.

Please lower the age of independence for registering for financial aide so that hard-working American students can get the assistance they need to better their lives and enrich this country. If we can claim ourselves on our taxes, why do we need our parents' financial information to go to college when they aren't paying for us?
