This semester is a unique/high-stress situation that students, faculty and the public are being affected by. With Western University closing, along with the majority of other public establishments, many students are now facing issues in terms of access and health. This petition is an effort to change the Physics 1029 final to a non-timed final exam - in an effort to reduce the high stress on students. Students with mental health issues of any sort are limited in their resources for assistance and considering instructions to self-isolate for a long period of time, the mental health of the students should be of higher concern to Western University, specifically to the Department of Physics. In addition, many students may be in a difficult financial situation, experiencing unreliable internet connection, limited internet connection or high-traffic internet use based on a large volume of people. Allowing a non-timed exam will eliminate some added stress that students are experiencing and take into account any internet connection/accessibility issues. Another science course that implemented this is Physiology 2130 (Phys/Pharm department). They were very responsive to students and changed the exam to cover fewer topics and be non-timed (24 hours to complete a set of questions/no time limit). We believe this decision by the physiology/pharmacology department is representative of Western's mission to assist students during this Pandemic and should be implemented in the Physics department as well.
