Suicide of a Student should Necessitate a formal inquiry at least at the institution level

We have recently lost one of our final year Medical Student, Mr. Emanuel Samual Wesley who had committed suicide unable to bear Academic Stress and due to Poor Supportive Efforts. Furthermore it is much worrying that the student had attempted suicide weeks earlier and treated in the same Teaching Hospital (Jaffna) where he had been attached for learning.

In the aftermath of his Loss, we, as students and past students, strongly believe that these sort of suicides can be prevented by

  1. Comprehensive formal inquiries - at least at the institutional level.
  2. A meaningful ‘Student Counseling System’ in contrast to a system of nominal student counselors.

Hence we urge that a formal inquiry into such events will help to find out the errors in the system and to rectify them to prevent further tragedies.
