the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy Has invited Linda Sarsour to speak to their graduates class on June 1st. This women has continuosly spewed anti Israel and anti Jewish rhetoric. People like this should not be allowed onto college campuses to poison the minds of impressionable young adults.
Although hate speech is not unlawful, some aspects to her speech can indeed be breaking the law. Linda Sarsour has spoken in support of some aspects of sharia law, and Sarsour has opposed state laws banning aspects of sharia law in the past. In Brandenburg v. Ohio, The Court held that government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless that speech is "directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action". With this ruling from the courts it can be proved that through her continued support for sharia law, as well as her opposition for state laws, she is in direct violation of inciting imminent lawless action. Linda Sarsour who broke the law with her words should not only be banned from college campuses, but she should be prosecuted in a court of law. There is no doubt that freedom of speech does indeed protect hate speech, but that same amendment protects the freedom to assemble as well. These two freedoms weren't inserted in the same amendment for no reason. As Americans it is our job to speak up respectfully, and indeed to assemble in some form when we see harmful speech being spewed.
