Why this petition matters

Started by Jules Murtha

Dear Boulder Community & Beyond,

We, the students and alumni of the University of Colorado Boulder’s department of Theatre & Dance and the College of Music are asking for your support of our demands of these departments, summarized below:

1: We demand, by the date of Tuesday, September 15, 2020, the department of Theatre & Dance and the College of Music each issue public apologies not only addressing the racially discriminatory casting and rehearsal processes involved in their productions of Hair and West Side Story, but also addressing each department’s complicity in the systemic racism and oppression of its BIMPOC students, faculty, and staff.

2: We demand the department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Music take tangible accountability for the perpetuation of systemic racism on campus.

3: We demand the department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Music create action plans to implement anti-racist policies and practices to ensure future classes and productions will be navigated ethically.

If you would like more information on the extent of these demands or access to the open letter addressed to CU's performing arts departments (largely inspired by the open letter written by Texas Tech University students to their departments), please contact Asha Romeo (asro4344@colorado.edu), Rita DiSibio (ridi5731@colorado.edu), or Jules Murtha (jmurtha526@gmail.com).
