Remove Disposable Coffee Cups from HSBC

The UK's addiction to coffee means that every year 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups are thrown away. Unfortunately, fewer than 1 in 400 of these are recycled, the rest ending up on landfill sites instead. Currently, at 8 Canada Square, 5,000 employees regularly use disposable coffee cups and there is no facility to clean a re-usable one. Barclays, across the road, has succeeded with an employee-backed campaign to ban disposable coffee cups.

With this in mind, we would like we would love to send this collective statement from us, as an intern group, to the Facilities Manager of 8 Canada Square:

"Dear HSBC Facilities Manager,

We would like to raise your attention to the issue of disposable coffee cups at 8 Canada Square. If 80% of the 5,000 HSBC employees at 8CS drink six coffees per week; then HSBC currently incurs a cost of 1,248,000 disposable cups and generates 3,744Kg of plastic waste per year. This could be avoided if we switched to a re-useable alternative.

One such alternative would be to provide HSBC employees with branded Keep Cups and implement associated cleaning stations on each floor.

We, the undersigned, as an intern group representing HSBC's youngest employees, feel strongly about environmental issues and would support a course of action which leads to the removal of single-use coffee cups in HSBC buildings. We hope that this is taken into consideration in decision-making processes.

In conjunction with this petition, we will be presenting to an internal 'Working Waste Group' with a viable business alternative to disposable plastic cups. If this were to result in change for 8 Canada Square, this process would hopefully be replicated for all HSBC locations.
