Facebook reported that 126 million Americans saw Russia-funded political ads and posts that spread on its platform through the election season last year. Intelligence officials reported to Congress on February 13, 2018 that there is still a real and present danger that Russia will continue these harmful tactics in the 2018 and 2020 American elections.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant to these shady tactics. Facebook must immediately do the following:
1. Notify its users immediately if that person inadvertently shared or posted any Russian political ads or fake stories. This should be done privately via messenger.
2. Label current and future ads or stories from foreign governments, foreign sites, or other questionable sources as "Suspicious" and explain why.
By doing these two things, Facebook will fulfill its commitment to make the platform more transparent and allow American citizens to meaningfully participate in our democratic process and dialogue. This will make Facebook time well spent.
