Let's look at a single infection disease and one that is often mistakenly thought mild to the point of being inconsequential: measles.

Per the WHO (http://www.who.int/en/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/measles):

  • Measles is one of the leading causes of death among young children even though a safe and cost-effective vaccine is available.
  • Measles vaccination resulted in a 84% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2016 worldwide.
  • In 2016, about 85% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday through routine health services – up from 72% in 2000.
  • During 2000-2016, measles vaccination prevented an estimated 20.4 million deaths making measles vaccine one of the best buys in public health.
  • In 2016, there were 89 780 measles deaths globally – marking the first year measles deaths have fallen below 100 000 per year.

90,000 deaths across the world means that anyone who isn't vaccinated (and might included older people, cancer patients and others with compromised immune systems who cannot receive a vaccination) is at risk from a life-threatening disease.

Right now there are countless groups and individuals using the power of social media to create echo chambers, often in or closed or secret groups, where the idea that vaccines harm, kill or promote autism. In many cases the US VAERS database is used to mislead and misinform about the true extent of the problem.

Right now we’re at almost at the cusp of the largest viral health crisis we have faced in decades and social media – promoting the idea of free speech without consequence – is a huge factor. All we get from Facebook are mealy-mouthed replies that these groups don’t go against the community standards and yet, we’ve already seen the impact of Russian state-sponsored meddling in the US elections.

All we ask is that Social Media firms accept a social responsibility to those of us who are unable to receive a vaccine and protect us from the agonizing and often fatal consequences of other people’s fallacious beliefs.

If you can read quotation from the famed children's author (recounted in 1982) without getting a lump you're probably not a parent. The full story is here and it's even more heart breaking.

Olivia's death wasn't preventable. Today, however, it would be.
