THE ARTIST’S ARGUMENT
When stone came to life?
If he divides the light from the darkness it is the creation and manifestation of himself as light.
As Leonardo said, one of the differences between a Painting and a Sculpture is that a Painting has its own light while a Sculpture needs an outside source of light.
When Pheidias created the Parthenon Sculptures he knew this – and he had in mind the Athenian light. He used its transparency and brilliance together with the play between light and shadow to create claroscuro and reveal the plasticity of the work of art. He set boundaries and transformed the volume according to the angle of the light. He unveiled plasticity and the spiritual aspect of the sculpture, the light as a spirit.
With the dialectic of the volume and the claroscuro he succeeded a “dialogue” between light and shadows, the two elements in Sculpture and Democracy.
Any change in the “incident” of light changes, altogether, the meaning of the Sculpture and its spirituality.
For these reasons the Sculptures seize to exist in London, they do not have “life” and they need to return to the place and for the place they were created, so they can again acquire soul and life.
