Currently alcohol brands, bars, and promoters are intentionally targeting recovering alcoholics and addicts on social media by utilizing hashtags otherwise exclusively used by the recovery community (i.e. #alcoholism, #recovery, #addiction, #aa, #12steps). 

Substance Use Disorder has been recognized as a medical condition by the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1980. This disorder destroys lives and leaves a wake of devastation.

Intentionally targeting a vulnerable group of people is predatory and reprehensible. We, the undersigned, ask that Facebook and Instagram take immediate action to better safeguard this vulnerable group of people and keep social media safer for all.
