Remove pages that are reported and proven to be fake
Facebook is filled with fake profiles. They themselves estimated that there are 83 Million fake pages on their website. Many of these are people who are impersonating someone and enticing others into relationships -- a tactic known as “catfishing.” Facebook should protect its users from having their photos used in this type of deception and from being deceived by profiles known to be fake.
I have been dealing with people impersonating me online for over nine years, after photos of me were hacked and stolen from my private Photobucket account. One of the main platforms they use is Facebook. One of the impersonations led a man to travel to my home in San Diego from Michigan with the intent to murder me and my boyfriend. This happened from just one fake profile using my pictures, and there are more pages using my pictures than I can count. I am not the only one dealing with this, I have had numerous people reach out to me and say that they are going through similar situations.
To make matters even worse, many of the pictures of me were taken when I was a minor, and they are being used on pages for sexual purposes.
When I report the fake pages, Facebook responds with a standardized message stating:
Thanks for letting us know about something you think may go against our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. In this case, we reviewed the profile you reported and found that it doesn't go against our Community Standards.
They send this same message every time without even taking the time to review the page or check the validity of the images and content.
Facebook needs to take responsibility and quit allowing this to occur on their website. They have the ability to make a huge difference in the lives that are affected by online impersonation "catfishing" and they refuse to do anything.
Sign my petition calling on Facebook to immediately remove pages and suspend accounts that use fake or stolen images.
**I do not and have not had social media since I knew that this was occurring with my pictures that were stolen off of PRIVATE accounts. I do not plan on ever having social media again, after all that I have been through, all that I want is my privacy. However, these people continue to use my old pictures (some from as long as 12 years ago) and they need to be stopped. Also, the millions of other people who choose to use Facebook should be protected from this happening to them. I have social media accounts for my foundation (which can be verified on my website at tiffanywatkins.org) for the sole purpose of raising awareness about this very dangerous issue.
Remove pages that are reported and proven to be fake. Although legally you are not considered responsible, your company should take responsibility for the profiles that are proven to be fake. I have reported at least 50 accounts using my pictures and each time I get the same standard response saying that these fake pages do not go against your community standards. This is unacceptable, and it seems as if your company has no "standards". You have the power to keep people from going through what I continue to go through and you should use your ability to make a difference. There are millions of people who use your site, you should make them feel safe on your site and stop allowing this crime to occur.
