This past June, the Hawai`i Tourism Authority reported an average daily census of 74,731 visitors. That means that on any given day in June 2021, there were about 75,000 visitors on Maui. The recommendation of our Maui Island Plan, which states that tourism should be kept at a 1:3 visitor-to-resident ratio to protect our quality of life would be 53,100 visitors with an estimated population on Maui as of now at 168,307. Since that is unattainable this petition asks that Maui Councilmembers and Mayor Victorino pass House Bill 60

Under Bill 60, the council seeks to impose interim restrictions on new visitor accommodations in the south and west to allow the County time to implement critical plan action items relating to visitor industry impact on the County’s environment and work towards resilience.

A few benefits would be:
1. The hotels will benefit by being at their max.
2. Workers in the building department of said new hotels/rentals can be rescheduled/redirected to work on infrastructure projects such as roads and parks for the locals.
3. By putting a moratorium on new rental buildings we can see what the ripple effect will be which hopefully is the hotels and legal rentals filled to capacity and our struggling local businesses thriving.

Thank you for your consideration. The vote comes up Aug 6th so please sign NOW
