Everyday 30 British people are tricked in webcam scams. Last year 900 such complaints were filed with police which was likely to be the tip of iceberg. In such scams people are tricked to chat with a person which could be a part of scam gangs from Morocco, Ivory coast, Pakistan, or Philippines. The person on other side would be running a fake explicit nude video and recording the webcam chat of the person in Britain, once the person on this side get driven into chat do sexual acts the scammer will run that video to the person chatting and use scare tactics to demand lots of money. They threat the person, if money is not transferred immediately then they will send the video to their family and friends and also publish it online on YouTube. Millions of pounds have been lost in this scam in last few years, worst is 4 people had to suicide, 2 were only teenagers. They had to do that horrible step because they thought there was no other way out. More and much more need to be done to stop this happening again and again. We know people make mistakes when they are online but this is too much of price to be paid. Social media has a big role to play in this, they can do lot more to prevent this happening by providing more information upfront but also to help in tracking these individuals and blocking them permanently so they cannot use these services to extort money and defame people. Please sign this petition in more numbers to make strong impact on the social media.
