Facebook's current policy on political ads is that it will not verify the ads to be factual, yet it will still accept payment for them.
In a time when Facebook continues to be unsuccessful in eliminating the posting and spreading of false non-paid political posts on its social media app, it must not exacerbate this problem by accepting paid political ads under its current policy. As such, we, the signees of this petition, demand that Facebook not accept any paid political ads until it has proven itself responsible in eliminating the dissemination of false postings - particularly in the lead-up to the November 2020 elections.
Facebook's current policy and lack of effective oversight are allowing bad actors to increase disinformation, divisiveness, and negative consequences in our country at a time when we need to come together.
By formalizing a policy of Not accepting paid political ads, Facebook can focus on its current problem: which is identifying ways to effectively curtail the mass disinformation of non-paid, false political posts. Additionally, Facebook can direct badly needed resources to repairing its tattered brand to one that is oriented to bringing people and the country together.
With close to 250 million active users in the USA, right now is not the time to put corporate profits, divisiveness and disinformation above a common-sense policy that will help unite the country (USA).
