Facebook must protect freedom activists from censorship

Facebook is an unprecedented media platform allowing people around the world to communicate, and allowing activists living under totalitarian regimes  - at great risk to themselves - to report on the truths that these regimes would rather censor so that the world can see the truth behind the regimes' carefully prepared false narratives and hear first-hand from their victims.

Unfortunately these regimes, in Myanmar, in Syria and elsewhere, and their backers and supporters have found ways to get activists' pages and news groups shut down, on Facebook and other social media via campaigns of harassment and complaints, often using trolls and bots in an effort to silence their voice on social media.

In an age where various demagogues and totalitarian powers are spending huge sums of money on propagating fake news, it's more important than ever to ensure that freedom activists who risk their lives to expose the brutal truth behind the regimes' slick lies are not silenced on Facebook and other social media by campaigns of harassment and censorship.

Freedom activists are not terrorists, but are the victims of tyrants and of sundry forms of terror.  While social media can't do anything to protect these activists in person, they and all decent people do have a duty to work to protect these activists and news pages online from persecution and censorship.

Social media  like Facebook are businesses, but they also have a powerful and unprecedented role to play as platforms for freedom to give a voice to freedom activists kept voiceless and oppressed by brutal regimes for too long.  Facebook must act to ensure that those voices and those platforms are better protected.
