Facebook have decided to discontinue the much loved Messenger emojis, instead opting to switch the Android and Web clients to the Facebook emoji font, and iOS to the standard Apple Emoji font. These messenger emojis had character like the others didn't have, and of all the standard emoji fonts available, the Messenger ones were simply the best looking ones, standing out from the crowd, whereas the newer Facebook emoji font feels like a flat version of the Apple emojis.
The Messenger emojis were introduced to bring about unity between the platforms, when they were introduced in June 2016 it was possible that an emoji sent from iOS would not be viewable on Android or visa versa. Although this may be less of an issue now, there's still the issue of the Water Gun emoji in the iOS font breaking the unity and other emojis simply convey a different message depending on whether they're the iOS or Messenger ones. By removing the beloved Messenger emoji font, you are bringing back the disunity between platforms they sought to break down.
If the reason to remove the Messenger emojis is to avoid having to maintain two emoji fonts, the solution is simple: Use the Messenger ones everywhere instead of the Facebook ones. The Messenger emoji font is the better font of the two, and the better of all the fonts.
