Dear Face Book,

While the intent of your commerce policy preventing the 'sale' of animals may be noble, the actual results are devastating to the very animals that FB sets out to help.

Tens of thousands of horses in the United States alone need rehoming every year through no fault of their own or their owner (over 170,000 end up being sent to slaughter).  Many of these are rescue horses that have been saved and rehabbed at great expense and are now ready for adoption.  Adoption and rehoming fees help to assure that rescuers can continue to help horses and there is nothing at all unethical or wrong about these rescuers recouping some of their costs.

These fees also help to prevent horses from ending up in horrible situations at the hands of less than ethical actors that prey on those offering 'free' and cheap horses by promising wonderful homes to these family pets and then immediately selling those horses by the pound for meat.  When a horse has a value attached to it that is above meat prices, it is much more likely to end up in a home that is committed and can afford the thousands of dollars of care it requires per year.

Every adoption fee for every animal, whether from high kill shelter, or from a small rescue, or from an individual, is legally a sale.  Animals change hands and change ownership.  A huge majority of the population that uses Face Book has animals, and this impacts all of our ability to help network these animals into safe and appropriate and humane homes and jobs.

For these reasons and so many more please alter your commerce policy so that we can continue using social media to help our beloved horses (and other animals).

Sincerely,

Animal Lovers Everywhere!
