Luke Neuner deserves the opportunity to continue his education at the Fabius Pompey Middle School/High School, and not be sent out of district due to his learning disabilities.
Fabius Pompey's mission is to provide an inclusive, safe learning environment where diverse forms of development are embraced, and core values such as integrity, respect, justice and compassion are cultivated. However, earlier this year the Neuner family learned that their son Luke will be unable to continue his 6th grade education at Fabius Pompey, as the districts only option for students with learning disabilities is to send them out of district to BOCES. This has left Luke and his family heartbroken.
Luke has absolutely thrived in his years at Fabius Pompey. He has excelled academically, participated in athletics and community activities, and most importantly made friendships that will last a lifetime. Many people often say that "to know Luke is to love him!" On a daily basis he has been an example to his classmates, teachers, and community of someone with integrity, respect, and compassion; the very qualities Fabius Pompey seeks to provide and cultivate in its students. Despite his disabilities, Luke has worked hard to not only succeed academically, but also to be a role model to other students of what it means to be a good person both inside and out. So much of academic success is nurtured by the relationships that are made along the way. Luke has been so excited to move up to the middle school with his friends and to be in the same school with his big brother and his father who is a social studies teacher and soccer coach there.
Luke has worked so hard. He deserves more. He deserves to be given the opportunity to continue his education with his friends and not be sent out of district simply because of his learning disabilities. Fabius Pompey prides itself on being a close-knit community. As a community we want more. We want Luke and other students with disabilities to stay right here, with their Fabius Pompey family! The school district needs to provide an in-district alternative to BOCES for out students with disabilities. Luke beams with Fabius Pompey pride, and his Fabius Pompey family stands behind him 100%. We want our voices heard that we want Luke here, at our school as our student, member of the community and friend!
