Exxon: Pay for the cleanup of the Mayflower, AR oil pipeline spill
Because of a technicality in the law, Exxon is not obligated to pay a penny to clean up the pipeline leak that has inundated a suburban neighborhood in Arkansas with “low-quality Wabasca Heavy crude oil from Alberta." A 1980 law ensures that this diluted tar-sands sludge is not classified as oil, and companies transporting it in pipelines do not have to pay into the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund. The damage this diluted bitumen does, however, is actually worse than normal crude. Exxon, the world's most profitable corporation, should pay the bill to clean up its mess, and not hide behind an unfair loophole.
