Exxon: Don’t Fuel Anti-LGBT Workplace Discrimination with U.S. Taxpayer Money
The corporation ExxonMobil takes millions of dollars in American taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars every year through federal contracts, but Exxon’s corporate bosses refuse to follow American values – like judging their employees based on their talent and hard work rather than whom they love. Most leaders in Corporate America have adopted policies banning workplace discrimination against LGBT Americans – because it’s the morally right thing to do, as well as what’s best for a company’s bottom line – but Exxon is one of the biggest corporate hold-outs that refuses to provide basic fairness to LGBT employees.
Thankfully, Americans are standing up to ExxonMobil and demanding change. Leaders like New York State’s Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli, are bringing a shareholder resolution to Exxon’s board meeting later this month pushing the corporation to adopt policies to ensure that Exxon employees are not fired or harassed at work because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Exxon’s LGBT employees also deserve an equal day’s pay for an equal day’s work.
In addition, leaders in Washinton. D.C. – including elected officials in the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as LGBT advocates from Freedom to Work, the Human Rights Campaign, the Center for American Progress and many other organizations – are pushing President Barack Obama to sign an executive order that would require federal contractors like ExxonMobil to adopt LGBT non-discrimination policies if they want to continue profiting from taxpayer-funded contracts. In 2008, candidate Barack Obama made a promise in writing that he would sign such an executive policy for federal contractors, and while White House staffers have stalled the policy, the President still has the opportunity to keep his promise by taking strong executive action in favor of workplace fairness.
In the meantime, we sign this Freedom to Work petition on change.org because we want ExxonMobil to clean up its act and start implementing the Golden Rule: treat others as we’d like to be treated, including our LGBT co-workers and family members.
