Why this petition matters

Started by Chelsea Engel

On Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a temporary period during which borrowers may receive credit for payments that previously did not qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. For years many borrowers were denied forgiveness due to the rule stating a borrower must be in an income driven repayment plan. Meaning many borrowers made payments for 10 years and were employed in public service but still were not granted forgiveness. The new waiver expires on October 31, 2022. This means that borrows, like me who will have made 120 payments and worked at a non-profit for 10 years as of November 1, 2022, will still not qualify for loan forgiveness! This rule needs to change permanently. Those of us who have made 120 payments and worked in public service, where salaries are always lower but the work is vital to our communities, should be granted forgiveness! Sign this petition to make The U.S. Department of Education change this rule permanently.
