23.07.2017
In the last few months we told you about the City of Surrey's plans to build a new connector road through Hawthorne Park and its relation to the street-level Light Rail proposal on 104th Avenue. We also told you about a campaign that was started up to oppose this road through Hawthorne Park.
"Save Hawthorne Park" has since applied to attend City Council as a delegation. The time and place of this Council meeting is:
MONDAY, July 24th, 2017 at 4:30PM
Surrey City Hall - 13450 104 Ave
Hawthorne Park is not the only park/forest that is being threatened as a result of street-level LRT planning that doesn't make sense. According to Save Hawthorne park, wthe City has recently informed stakeholders that there are plans to completely remove the protected/reserved status from every single park and forest throughout the entire city. We wonder if perhaps this is also a consequence of the LRT planning that rips up communities and causes considerable disruption on our streets.
The extensive road expansion that is running through and destroying our parks and green spaces is a consequence of having to accommodate the disruption throughout the community by placing a light rail train system at grade-level and reducing capacity on major city roads.
Hundreds of trees have already given way in Green Timbers Forest for the expansion of 100th Avenue (which will see increased traffic after 104 Ave loses 2 lanes to LRT), and significant right-of-way widening on Fraser Hwy will be required to accommodate a grade-level LRT right-of-way spanning between 2 and 3 traffic lanes going through the forest. This is completely unacceptable, and we need to send a strong message to City Council that we place a strong value on what is being lost to us because of the decision to build LRT instead of SkyTrain.
"Save Hawthorne Park" is looking for an attendance of at least 500 people to voice opposition in-person. As of this update, our petition for SkyTrain is more than 2500 people strong. If you have time to make it out, please do attend!
