Canada is rich in water resources, and the government is exporting huge quantities of water to other countries around the world in recent years. Most Canadians don’t consider the crisis is closer to home as people enjoy vast freshwater resources. However, in fact, thousands of people can hardly have access to clean drinking water within our borders - the First Nation communities. The lack of Federal government action towards this water crisis exhibits the social discrimination and injustice towards Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Due to industrial pollution residue dating back to the 60s and 70s, nearly two-thirds of residents in First Nations territories are suffering ongoing effects of mercury poisoning, including loss of feeling in fingers and toes. There’s no reason anyone in a nation with Canada’s freshwater resources should be risking health problems. Canada has the obligation to end the First Nations Water Crisis.

Each year, the government export massive water resources to other countries, like the United States, but attempts to ignore the rights of First Nations communities to access the freshwater on their land. The human right of accessing safe drinking water is fundamental, and it is unacceptable that the Canadian government has failed to provide this to Indigenous communities for decades. Collectively, we can raise awareness on the First NationWater Crisis, and push the government to make changes on this issue:

  1. Reduce water exports to other countries
  2. Develop a distribution plan to ensure long-term and sustainable water access for the First Nations
  3. Allocate financial support to improve the water-related facilities
  4. Establish a First Nations water commission to monitor and evaluate government performance

People who do not have concerns about water supplies, like us, are not supposed to turn a blind eye on this issue. Please sign this petition to push the Canadian federal government to take actions on providing accessible and clean water to the First Nations. Every signature is one step closer to clean water and a better future.
