Expel Russia from the United Nations Security Council

Expel Russia from the United Nations Security Council
Why this petition matters
On 1 April 2022, the atrocities and war crimes committed by Russia in Bucha, Kyiv became known to the international community. This, and the atrocities committed by the Russian Government throughout Ukraine since 24 February 2022, have been deeply disturbing. They show a complete disregard for human life and human rights. This, coupled with Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons, undermines the international rules-based order that has been in place since the end of World War II.
Russia's suspension from the United Nations Human Rights Commission on 7 April 2022 was a significant step in showing Russia that the international community and reputable international institutions, such as the United Nations, will not tolerate Russian aggression and violation of human rights. However, more needs to be done.
We are calling on the Australian Government to do more. We urge you to advocate for the removal of Russia from the United Nations Security Council and the suspension of its permanent membership and veto powers until the Russian war in Ukraine ends. Russia is a threat to global security and should not have a seat in a forum that considers and adjudicates on security matters. It should not have the ability to veto any resolutions calling for the end of the war it started in Ukraine.
As a member of the United Nations and as a democracy, Australia cannot allow Russia to stay on the United Nations Security Council while it undermines global security. Australia cannot allow Russia to exercise veto power against any resolutions designed to end Russia's war in Ukraine. Australia should support reforms to amend the United Nation's frameworks to ensure permanent members cannot exercise veto powers to avoid accountability for their breaches of international law.
Your support is vital to ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of the United Nations as a reputable international institution that promotes global peace and stability.
Please act now.
