The creation of the Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) Program and the funding of the entry level Director position (previously held by Andrea Breau) was an important first step toward providing more support for issues of sexual and gender diversity on campus, issues that include combating sexual violence and homophobia.
However, this position was combined into two jobs with the addition of the Associate Director of the Pugh Center position. Andrea Breau’s recent resignation has made it clear that it is not possible for one individual to devote adequate time and attention to both positions. Placing the responsibility of multiple positions on one person does a disservice to all students since pervasive cultures of gender and sexual violence affect the entire community, often intersecting with other forms of oppression. By converting the current position (GSD Director and PC Associate Director) into two separate positions, Colby would strengthen its institutional commitment to creating a fairer, more welcoming and more egalitarian environment on campus.
In the spirit of Colby’s aspiration “to confront and overcome actions and attitudes that discourage the widest possible range of participation our community,” we respectfully petition Colby to hire a full-time GSD Director AND a full-time Associate Director of the Pugh Center: two jobs, two people, and two steps further toward a safer, more inclusive campus community.
Please sign and share this petition if you believe in two jobs, two people.
