Expand recess (UBT) to a 30 minute minimum at Laurel Ridge Elementary

We, parents in the Laurel Ridge community, feel strongly that our children need more than the minimum 15 minutes of Unstructured Break Time (UBT) currently allowed in the schedule. We want UBT at Laurel Ridge Elementary to be expanded to a minimum of 30 minutes daily. UBT should be scheduled at a meaningful time to provide a break in the day and to reap the research validated benefits of recess.
UBT is a critical component of our children's mental, physical, social and academic well-being. More UBT will foster our kids' satisfaction and engagement in their school experience. Our kids crave movement and a break from the stress and pressure of their long school day. The current 15 minutes in their 6 1/2 hour school day does not allow adequate time for kids to play, relax and expend energy.
According to the CDC's "Strategies For Recess in Schools," recess benefits students by:
- Increasing their level of physical activity.
- Improving their memory, attention, and concentration.
- Helping them stay on-task in the classroom.
- Reducing disruptive behavior in the classroom.
- Improving their social and emotional development (e.g., learning how to share and negotiate).
We understand there are significant challenges to schedule the additional time. However, the benefits to our children and school are compelling and we feel confident that a creative and workable solution can be achieved.
