ugh started this petition to Executive Group, University of Kent

In a recent communique [1] the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kent describes the "UK political landscape" as "febrile". These words quite neatly summarise how the University feels to many of us at the moment. In this context, and given the austerity agenda now firmly in place, perhaps now is not a good time to proceed with two free barbecues for staff?

Departments are already cutting back on cleaning, provision of milk, tea, or coffee for staff, frequency of research seminars, and many other measures which collectively will help the University to recover the financial sustainability we are told is such a high priority. A voluntary severance scheme is in progress that could lead to 200 plus staff leaving. The Organising for Success programme is seemingly going ahead and is also driven by a cost-cutting agenda. Quite apart from the very obvious continuation of large-scale capital projects around the Canterbury campus, the very visible and no doubt expensive provision of "make nice" events for staff does not send an appropriate message and may not be appreciated by the intended recipients of this largesse.

Please lead by example and do not proceed with this event.
