Keep Team Championships in Swim Ontario
Team Championships have been in Ontario since 1977. It has been cancelled for the 2016-2017 season and beyond by the Executive Director of Swim Ontario following a review by the Sport Development Committee.
"Swim Ontario is no longer in a position to support Team Champs as part of the Swim Ontario Provincial Championship Program. HOWEVER – Swim Ontario WILL SANCTION one or more clubs taking on this meet in a similar format as an invitational event."
This is a fundamental mistake and impacts hundreds of swimmers and families. Yes the competition may not fit today's Olympian, but it does fit tomorrow's. Many of our Olympic hopefuls still recognize this meet as one of the best experiences of their youth.
Ontario Team Championships are unique in that they provided Ontario clubs and a large number of their swimmers with a major Provincial competition. Many swimmers that would otherwise never have a taste of being in a championship environment find the opportunity within this competitive venue. This is a highlight of the season for thousands of Ontario swimmers and for many of these Ontario swimmers the highlight of their swimming career.
The production of an elite world-class athlete is only one of many goals for Swim Ontario. Another, albeit intangible goal, is to create young athletes with strong life skills, that can make them better people within our society. Team Championships has so many unique benefits not found within traditional competitions.
I would strongly suggest that this decision to terminate the Provincial Team Championships be re-considered.
