Plans have been submitted to develop The Palms wedding hall in Ta Giorni area, just off the village core, into three massive towers, including a commercial component. This is one of the last areas in St Julians which is purely residential, bar the village grocer, stationery and such like. It is one of the last oases of peace in St Julians where the noise and chaos further down does not reach. Roads are already subject to much traffic bypassing the congested Mrabat street. Such a development would ruin the village-feel of the area, increase traffic to proportions that cannot be sustained by the narrow streets, and suffocate the nearby 2 storey houses, with their terraces and pretty symmetry, with its overbearing height. Moreover, it would effectively destroy any privacy that these houses enjoy.
Similar massive developments have already been proposed twice for the same site, in 2004 and 2007, and refused following an outcry by residents for similar reasons. The traffic situation and the overdevelopment of Malta is now only so much worse.
