Examine Ms. Young’s Position in the Eaglecrest Math Department
It is no secret amongst those in her class that Ms. Young is a difficult and unsympathetic teacher in the math department of Eaglecrest High School. It is time that she is held accountable by the administration of our school.
On a regular basis, stories detailing harsh and tumultuous interactions with Ms. Young are exchanged between her students. I have plenty of these stories myself. Nearly every day when I walk into class, I hear a student remark that their day is ruined at the point which they walk into her classroom. Ms. Young has gained notoriety for her rude and spiteful treatment of students. This is a large reason why so many threaten to drop out of her class for second semester. However, her failures as a teacher go much deeper than her bedside manner.
In addition to her treatment of students, Ms. Young employs an unfair method of grading her students. First and foremost, she grades only tests, essentially removing the cushion and learning opportunities of graded homework. Furthermore, students consistently feel underprepared for her tests. On many occasions, Ms. Young has put content on tests that we are completely unfamiliar with. This is unacceptable, especially for how many tests we are given in her class. In fact, many of these tests are mandatory retakes. If a student gets an A on the first version of the test but forgets the content before the mandatory retake and gets a D the second time around, their overall test score results in a diminished average. Finally, she does not grade according to the AP scale or use a curve on test grades, no matter the class averages. To Ms. Young, only her students can fail; never her. This not only adds to the toxicity of her “learning environment,” but is extremely detrimental to the futures of her students, for whom Ms. Young has little regard.
It is up to the students to determine if we are learning, and the fact is that under Ms. Young, we are not learning. Sign this petition so that Ms. Young can be held accountable!
