SEE THIS DOCUMENT FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR PROPOSAL.

We are students and parents who live in the Essex Westford School District (“EWSD”) in Vermont.  We believe that the scheduling method that Essex High School (“EHS”) is planning to use for the 2020-2021 academic school year, the so-called “4x4” model, is misguided and will negatively impact the future academic plans of the ~1,400 Essex High School students. We preface our proposal with the assurance that, like all members of the administration and staff, we are first and foremost concerned with the safety and health of all students, parents, staff, administrators, and others in the EWSD school system. However, we respectfully request that the EWSD School Board and/or the EHS Administration not to use the 4x4 model for scheduling, perhaps reverting to the traditional A/B scheduling in some way, shape or form instead.

In summary, we believe that 4x4 schedule yields the following problems:

  • The 4x4 schedule model does not align with the timing and course requirements of the AP curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to cramming of AP curriculum to one semester or even one quarter, the AP course registration deadline of October 25 being before some second semester AP classes start, and the lack of review or less time to learn the material depending on whether the AP classes are first or second semester.
  • The 4x4 schedule cannot be reasonably implemented without the curtailing of course selection. Within the ~1,400 member student body, there will be hundreds of scheduling conflicts that would ultimately force all students to take homogenous classes that may be redundant or unnecessary due to prior classes taken.
  • The 4x4 schedule model will interfere with students’ learning. Contrary to the admin’s belief that “Fewer courses at a time allows for more focus and time spent on learning,” we anticipate that the increased frequency of classes will merely burn out students.
  • The 4x4 schedule model has been put forth with the community left entirely in the dark. We know none of the fine details pertaining to the 4x4 schedules, and students/families thus far have been unable to lend a voice in its development.

(We go into these arguments and proposed solutions into greater depth in the linked document above.)

To the EWSD School District and the EHS Administration: We deeply implore you to consider the implications of moving to the 4x4 schedule. Such a move could irrevocably impact the future academic plans of the ~1,400 students at Essex High School for years to come.

To the students, parents, teachers, and other community stakeholders who are reading this petition: We ask for your support by sharing this petition and the above document with your friends, greater family, and peers through social media — FaceBook, Instagram, etc. — and emails detailing your disapproval of the 4x4 plan to the EWSD School District and the EHS Administration.

Sincerely,

Eric Lu — EHS Class of 2021

Patrick Herrin — EHS Class of 2021

Tunmay Gerg — EHS Class of 2021
