Social Media is Detrimental to Teens Mental Health

How many times a day while scrolling through social media have you compared yourself to others or thought bad about yourself? Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Marissa Sanchez and today, I’m here to discuss how social media platforms are corrupting the minds of teens and what we need to do as an individual to stop all of the negativity.

LIKES
Now ladies and gentlemen, I know when you all post on social media all you do is worry about the amount of likes you get. Is 100 now the magic number? If teens do not exceed over 100 likes per post they will assume that they are ugly or not good enough. They soon become insecure and they take it down immediately. 97% of teens use social media and have to deal with situations like this. Is this really what the generation has come to? Taking down instagram posts due to the low number of likes you get?

DISINCLUSION
Now, social media is not only putting people down while looking at other “flawless” people, but people are feeling awful when seeing posts at parties and events that they weren't invited to. No girl nor boy should have to feel the sense of betrayal or feel excluded from any event. Well guess what, social media is the path taking you straight to that awful feeling you have at 11:00 at the night while sitting in your bed alone while looking at pictures and videos from a party happening at the moment that you had no clue about. 54% of girls and 39% of boys find themselves disincluded through social media. Disinclusion can lead to teen depression and cause teens to have suicidal thoughts thinking that they are not good enough because they weren't invited. Is this really what boys and girls should be experiencing while stressed about things at home, academics, and other important things.

PEER PRESSURE
Drugs, alcohol, and danger are all factors under peer pressure. Have any of you all been peer pressured to do something you didn't feel comfortable doing or knew it was wrong but still did it anyway? 75% of teens feel obligated to drink and do drugs after seeing posts of their friends doing it online. Peer pressure could lead to many serious factors including police, court, and even jail. We need to stop this content on social media so that teens don't suffer now and eventually when they are older.

In conclusion, in my fight to keep teens away from the atrocities of social media, please sign on my petition posted on change.org. Each and every one of your signatures will be a help to one step closer to restricting negative content on social media and having it looked over pre posting. As Well as confidence boosters for girls and boys growing up feeling bad about themselves due to fake app body procedures.
