Peaceful Political Transition in Armenia

We, the undersigned representatives of the Armenian-American community, express our deep concern regarding the events underway in Yerevan and throughout Armenia. Our primary interest is the well-being of the Armenian people, the strength and vibrancy of the Armenian state, and the unity of the Armenian nation - the combined force of the Republic of Armenia and its Diaspora.
We pay tribute to the spirit of freedom, independence, and civic engagement exhibited by Armenian citizens - particularly students and youth - who have become the true bearers of an Independent and Free Armenia. Their commitment to the lawful demands that their voice is heard and their rights are upheld has inspired us into action. We are convinced that in their hands, the Republic of Armenia is assured a bright, vibrant, and honorable future.
We understand the difficult predicament of Armenia’s law enforcement representatives - caught between executing their orders and joining their fellow citizens in a moment of public action. We call on their restraint and beseech them to live up to the true intent of their oaths - to protect the people and Republic of Armenia from all foes, foreign and domestic.
The current movement of civil disobedience in Armenia makes evident that the leadership of the Republic of Armenia must immediately launch the development of a new social compact between the Armenian citizenry, its political leadership, and the Diaspora - one that is based on the interests of the many, not the few; one that enshrines the transparent expression of the will of the people; and one that assures the peace and stability of the Republic above all. We call on the leading Armenian-American organizations to play a constructive role in this process.
The Armenian people have spoken. The responsibility now falls squarely on the Armenian leadership to take the difficult steps of compromise, concession, and transition.
On the eve of the 103rd anniversary of the devastating atrocities which sought to bring the Armenian people to the brink of extinction, let us as a unified nation live up to the greatest ideals of the Armenia for which our forebears fought and died to protect. In so doing, we will together build the Armenia of which we dream.
