The time is now to start caring for our elderly loved ones as a community. The truth is many of our elderly loved ones have devoted themselves to us throughout their lives. They have been there for all of our important milestones: our first birthday, our first day of school, our special anniversaries. However, over time, too many of them have found themselves virtually cast aside by the society that they have helped build; ageist and ableist notions have deemed them no longer “valuable.” Families who would otherwise spend more of their day with elderly loved ones have found themselves too “busy” with work and other life responsibilities. These conditions disproportionately affect marginalized families who face more barriers, and have less access to resources, due to their intersecting identities.

It is time to be the change we want to see! We need to recognize that this is not an individual issue but a collective social one. We are petitioning for a Universal Elder Care Benefit, which will support family members finding the space in their lives to spend with older loved ones. Long overdue societal support will remove obstacles that currently force families to choose between their livelihood or loved ones. For our Universal Elder Care Benefit, we are recommending the following, and we call it the 5-5-5 model:

  • 5 hours a week of time off work with job protections provided by employer(s) and protected by law.
  • $5,000/a year
  • 5 years duration (requalified after the 5 year period)

Our capitalist system continues to insist that our worth as humans be measured according to our productivity, as our only contribution to society. The reality is we are all intrinsically valuable. Social services dedicated towards our children have recently been expanded  to include both maternity and paternity caregiver time. But, how about our elderly population? Our elderly population is clearly not as valued in our current capitalist system, could this be because they no longer produce profit? The impact of ageist/ ableist dehumanization is evidenced in the little attention paid to the dire consequences of rampant social isolation among our elderly population. According to the CDC, social isolation in elders increases:

  • Risk of premature death, a risk that is comparative to those of smoking
  • Dementia by 50%
  • Heart disease by 29%
  • Stroke by 32%
  • Higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide

Sign this petition and show your active support for our ancestors who walk among us. Let’s work collaboratively to create new space to re-imagine how our system operates, in a way that includes our elderly population. Together we can break a silence that has gone on for too long! After signing this petition with us today, we can continue our call to action by educating ourselves, by visiting https://www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca/ or  https://www.carp.ca/ This is not a solo fight, talk to your family, friends, and elderly loved ones and spread this urgent call to action!
