In celebration of yesterday's #Facebook #Whatsapp #IG outage on October 4th 2021, I am proposing an official "No Social Media Day" to occur every October 4th henceforth!

We can all admit that far too much of our lives is consumed by social media. Life was not meant to be lived through our electronics and human's don't deserve to have their personalities and personal details monetized in order to better monopolize their time, mental health, and emotions through "targeted" adds and content.

Even for those of us whose livelihood depends on clicks/likes and shares, surely there is space for 1 day out of the year to step away. A chance to make connections in person, a chance to see someone and give them hug, a time to see their face through your own eyes opposed to through a screen.  As technology takes over greater and greater portions of our lives and time, let us take one day to step away from our digital personas and experience the world as we have for centuries.

We will still have telephones and email and text messaging to contact those we care about and to accomplish the business of our lives; this day is not about isolation or detachment from each other, from information or even from ourselves. Let us only detach from the blue electric glow of that inviting "f" that has taken so many hours of our lives and will only continue to.

The happenings of our lives are so much more vibrant than a few pictures, so much more perceptive than a few comments, so much more meaningful than click button likes, and so much more amazing and beautiful than anything we could hope to capture or express through that drab black piece of metal and glass perpetually attached to our hip.

We have an opportunity to make every October 4th going forward special. Let's not do it for the Gram, let's cast aside the ticktocks and forget about going viral, just for a day, for ourselves and for each other, and see how much better we feel, how much more connected we become, and see what amazing things we can accomplish.
